One More Chance by Abbi Glines

One More Chance by Abbi Glines

One More Chance (Chance, #2)

5 Stars!!!!

My favorite Abbi Glines did it again, she made me fall in love with yet another of her books. I really loved One More Chance.  I went through a wide range of emotions while reading it.  I was annoyed, sad, happy, worried and excited throughout the book.  It even brought me to tears at times.  I love books that can make me feel so much and One More Chance did that.

*Warning* If you haven’t read Take A Chance then this review may spoil parts of the book for you.

When I started the Rosemary Beach series Grants book was one I was really looking forward to.  In Take A Chance I was disappointed in Grant.  His man-whore ways, and his reaction to Harlow’s secret were not what I accepted out of him.  I understand he was scared of losing someone he loves, especially after losing Jace, but I just thought he would be stronger than that.  Well, he redeemed himself in One More Chance.  After Harlow left him after his bad reaction to her secret, he called every day and he looked everywhere for her but couldn’t find her. He was desperate to get her back.  Once he finally got Harlow back, he became the man I thought Grant really was.  Even though he was scared out of his mind because of events I won’t say, he stayed by Harlow’s side and took every step with her no matter what he felt or what others thought around them.

I’ve always liked Harlow ever since she was introduced in the series.  She is quiet, shy and kept to herself never waiting to be part of her rock star fathers life style.  When she meets Grant he sweeps her off her feet, he introduces her to love and intimacy two things she never knew before.  Their relationship hits a few bumps in Take A Chance and Harlow ends up running away from Grant.  She hides out with her half-brother Mase where no one can find her, not even Grant.  I never thought Harlow was weak or a pushover, she just minded her own business and kept to herself, but when she is faced with a life threatening choice Harlow become strong and a fighter.  She stepped up and put her foot down and wouldn’t let anyone change her mind or her decision.

Harlow and Grant didn’t have it easy in this book, but they stuck together and faced their fears and challenges together. That's one of the things I loved most about One More Chance, they stayed together and work as a team.

The wait for You Were Mine Tripp and Bethy’s book is going to be hard.  I feel like Bethy’s story has been building and building throughout this series and its time for her to get her turn.  I really can’t wait for it!

Author: Cassie Graham

Release Date: Fall 2014

Synopsis:

Whitley Hayes is an ordinary girl with a gypsy heart. College is the only constant in her life. She’s made a lot of mistakes and she intends on keeping them in the past.

Move on and forget.

That’s her motto.

Jennings Cohen is no ordinary man—not at all. He would have never imagined his life would turn into such a spectacle. The tabloids exploit him, fans stalk him and the paparazzi are relentless. It’s not always fun being Jennings.

It doesn’t help that he has a secret. One that comes at a price he’s not sure he can pay.

Relationships get complicated and hearts shatter.

It’s not easy living a lie, but it’s easier than telling the truth.

Excerpt:

“These people?” I question. I hadn’t noticed anyone else but Whitley since the moment I picked her up.

She levels her eyes, taking a drink of the water that was just delivered. I watch as she plays with the straw with her tongue, unintentionally. My mouth goes dry and I have to gulp past the lump in my throat.

“Yes, these people.” She slyly motions at the room. “Every person who’s made any sort of contact with you has this starry-eyed, dopey look to them.”

I put my arms on the table and lower my head. “You know,” I whisper. “I’m sort of famous.”

Next comes a swift kick to my shin and I wince, laughing. “Okay, okay. That was tacky.”

She covers her mouth from laughing. “Maybe a little.”

“What can I get you?” the waitress asks, interrupting us.

Whitley’s eyes widen. “Oh, umm.” She pushes the hair back from her face.

She’s so beautiful.

“Instead of the Mahi-Mahi, can I just get the one Mahi, because I’m not that hungry?”

My eyes bulge and I can’t contain my burst of laughter.

Saying nothing, the waitress pauses as Whitley looks up to her looking innocent and doe-eyed.

I have to give it to Whitley, she doesn’t break. She keeps a straight face and looks to the waitress, expecting a response.

“We,” the waitress, whose name appears to be Lacy, stutters, not understanding the movie quote. “We’re actually out of the Mahi-Mahi.”

Unaffected, Whitley closes the menu. “Oh, well, okay. I’ll just have the tilapia with roasted vegetables. Thank you.”

Lacy takes Whit’s menu, shakes her head and turns to me. “And, for you?”

Now she’s short with me.

“I’ll take the flounder. Thank you.” I smile at her, struggling to break the tension.

Lacy’s shoulders soften and she takes my menu and heads toward the kitchen.

When we’re alone, I look to Whitley. “House Bunny? Really?”

“What? I thought it was funny.”

“Me too,” I admit. Laughter is something that has been sparse in my life.

“Is it your favorite movie?”

She laughs. “House Bunny? God, no. Funny, but certainly not my favorite.”

“Then, what is?”

She takes a moment to think, not answering right away. “Honestly? I don’t really have a favorite movie. Well...I mean, maybe I do. It’s just so hard to choose. It changes all of the time.”

“Okay. Top three.”

“Umm...Princess Bride, Ferris Buller’s Day Off, and uhh—oh geeze, any Harry Potter.”

She seems embarrassed by her admission, but I sort of love her list. All classics in their own right.

“My name is Inigo Montoya. You kill my father. Prepare to die.”

“Yes!” She whoops. “Best line, ever.”

I laugh. “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

She stomps her foot under the table. “Inconceivable!”

We laugh together, and Whitley’s eyes sparkle with mischief.

“Okay, Mr. Famous, what is your top three?”

I hesitate. I’m always asked this question in interviews. Most are just hoping for their next endorsement, but I always give a generic answer. Usually, it’s the movie I’m filming or promoting at the time.

Cracking my knuckles, I try to really think about my answer. I’ve never genuinely thought about it. “Oh Christ, you can’t ask an actor that,” I laugh. “Really, I don’t know.”

Her shoulders sag. “You don’t know?”

“I don’t. I’m always in movies. I don’t have time to actually watch them. Hell, I’ve never even seen any of the movies I’ve filmed.”

“Wait, wait.” Whitley puts her hands up, stopping me. “You’ve never watched one of your own movies? Like, you’ve never watched yourself on the big screen?”

I shrug my shoulder. “Nope.”

“What?” she asks, dumbfounded. “Why? How? I mean—Jesus, Jenns, what do you do at premiers?”

I turn away, not really proud of my answer. “I leave. Slip out the back, or sit in the lobby. It’s always deserted while the film is running.”

“Then what? You return as the credits roll?”

“Basically, yeah.”

“Wow,” she breathes.

“It’s just my thing. I don’t like to watch myself. In my eyes, I could always change my performance. I could have said something with more feeling, or looked deeper into the characters eyes. I’m hard on my acting, and in turn, end up beating myself up. It makes me a shitty actor.”

Whitley stares at me blankly as I give up one of my secrets.

It seems like hours before she blinks.

“What are you thinking?” I ask. Frankly, I’m tired of waiting for her to say something. I thought she’d at least have an opinion.

Slightly shaking her head, she drags her fingers through her hair. “Holy shit. You have no idea.”

My mouth quirks down, and I tilt my head. “I have no idea, what?”

“You are...,” her eyes haze, letting me see into that door of her soul. “You are phenomenal on screen. Charismatic and fluid. Compelling and magnetic.” She touches my hand. “You draw people in with looks alone, Jennings.”

Not that my ego needs anymore feeding, but, fuck me, hearing her say those words. Words that don’t mean shit from anyone else, makes me feel like jumping on the table and shouting for fucking joy.

My smile can’t be controlled. “You’ve seen my movies, Whitley?”

She rolls her eyes, a smirk breaking through her features. “Shut up. Everyone has."

“I didn’t peg you for someone to watch those kinds of movies.”

She snorts a laugh and rubs under her eye. “Yeah, well, you’re sort of famous.”

“You can’t resist my raw magnetism, right? God, I’m sexy.”

The Viper by Kele Moon

The Viper (Untamed Hearts, #1)

5 Star review

The Viper (Untamed Hearts) by: Kele Moon

Note: Before you read this book, make sure to read Marcos Rivera's Boricua Guide to Spanish and Street Slang, at the back of the book. You'll probably not have any issues guessing the street slang, however, if you lack in your Spanish skills, like me, you'll want to check this out FIRST.

On to my review...

I really loved this book. I'm not one to hand out 5 star reviews so easily, however, this book hit the perfect spot for me. I was happy and excited reading this story the entire time. It left a smile on my face the entire way. I loved it. There was just something different in the way it was written compared to the many stories I read each week. It was straight up with no games attached. It was a good book about second chances in life and love. The couple were mature adults and the decisions Marcos made were based off very good reasons. He didn't make them lightly.

-----///-----///-----///-----///----

Marcos Rivera. This guy is straight up a mans man. He's not a hearts and flower guy, but he will make you feel sexy all the same. There's no pretenses with this guy. He is who he is and what he is, and he makes no apologies for it. He will tell you himself, he's straight up a thug and dangerous. He takes life head on. But never, and I mean NEVER, mess with his family.

"You're not exactly a ten, Katie," Grayson laughed cruelly, reminding Katie why she left to begin with.
"I think she's a ten," a man called from behind them. (<---Marcos)

Marcos is an OG and would love to get out of the life he choose with the gang. Too bad he doesn't seem to have good luck and can't hold a steady job without the cops always breathing down his back. So, what's left? And why fight the inevitable? He knows he will either die in the life of the gang, or wind up back in jail. Why should the fates smile down on him and offer up anything else?

Katie Foster. A divorced school teacher living in a small town while dodging her ex-husband. The guys in her town aren't knocking down her door as she thinks she's not a complete knockout and maybe too curvy.  She's resigned to live out her days lonely.

Chuito pointed at her. "You're a high school teacher, for [Heavens] sake. You are one big rule."
"Don't call her big, " Marcos snapped at him. "Lush. Sexy." He liked the sound of that and amended his cousin's statement. "She's one sexy rule I wouldn't mind following."

Until a fateful night brings her world literally crashing into Marcos' life. Nothing will be the same again.

"I can't stop thinking that maybe two  negatives might equal a positive. That together, even something as terrible as a car accident can be beautiful."

When Marcos and Katie meet, an instant connection forms between them.  She can't stop thinking about him.  Neither can Marcos get Katie out of his head. Too bad he feels he doesn't deserve someone good like Katie. And too bad he doesn't know how much he impacted Katie and how much she changes because of him.

Now Marcos will need to decide: go back to the life of the gang, or see if fate will give him a chance at better. Can Katie change Marcos' views of himself and what he deserves? Will Katie be strong enough if he walks out of her life a second time?

Marcos has life decisions to make. He knows he needs to protect his family at all costs, and Katie as well.

Will fate bring these two together for good? Or just toy with them in the long run?
"Fine," Marcos assured him. "I think they'll be fine. We'll all be fine."
"Three of the craziest people I know in one house. I'm very scared about that."
Chuito is right about that!

-----///-----///-----///-----///-----
 What I LOVED:
1. Katie. She plays no games. She knows what she wants. She feels strong for what she wants and believes in. She takes chances head of.
2. Marcos. He's not a liar. He's not a cheater. He's loyal to a fault. He's not alpha, but he's not hearts and flowers either. He says it like it is, even if its crude, dirty or foul. You'll never have to guess what he's thinking. But he loves fiercely, he can be funny, he's a fighter, and he's protective. And dang if he doesn't make you feel wanted and sexy and can be sweet in his own way. Plus, I loved when he spoke Spanish here and there and always called everyone A-holes. Yeah, he's a bit "crazy".
3. Chuito. Best cousin ever. He would die for you.
4. Tia Sofia. This woman is crazy but funny and she means well.
5. Marcos and Chuito's loyal friends.
6. This story is told from the points of views of: Marcos, Katie and Chuito.
7. There's never a dull or boring moment. The story kept me intrigued the entire time.
8. I liked some of the gang scenes as we were able to get a little bit of the dangerous side of Marcos' life.
9. Marcos and Katie's first shower scene.
10. Small bits of humor
11. Seeing some characters from the Battered Hearts series. We meet Chuito in book 2 in that series as a secondary character.

What a great start to a new spin off series from Battered Hearts. I look forward to what comes next. I really hope Chuito gets his story soon.
